Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in a continuous dispute with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Falling Apart?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Surprising Comeback

One individual kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, Lazio were pushing for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in that campaign, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was still trying to work out the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
