RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
