Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Championship Defense with Nail-Biting Double Overtime Victory
The Thunder star joined Oklahoma City back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the winning baskets deep into double overtime as the defending champions started their NBA title defense with a narrow victory over the Houston Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime, securing the titleholders a positive start.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.
But the Thunder's rookie, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Determination and defence," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Prior to the game, the team's title banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were awarded their championship rings.
The Thunder beat the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team relocated in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some early revenge on Friday when they face the Thunder, while the Rockets are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a huge effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine dimes from the Slovenian star was not enough to prevent his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 119-109 defeat against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer LeBron James as he is recovering from a back issue.
