The Developer's Troubled Action Game Marathon Shows Signs of Life

Marathon, Bungie's much-anticipated project, has resurfaced with the announcement of a closed technical test scheduled to take place soon.

A Challenging Path to Launch

First announced during the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game has undergone a bumpy development cycle. Last fall, the developer stated it was aiming to start Alpha tests sometime in 2025. This was followed by quiet months, until the project was showcased again in April with a planned September release. However, after some playtests led to negative feedback, the studio revealed during summer that it was delaying Marathon indefinitely.

Steering Clear of Controversy

Despite Marathon has already seen its portion of issues, the development team appears committed to ensure Marathon doesn't suffer Concord's fate. Currently, it seems the game's development is finally getting back on track, as they just disclosed that it has conducted multiple private tests to gather feedback on the game" since June of this year. The developer is expanding access, allowing additional participants to catch a glimpse of the experience via an forthcoming "closed technical test."

Exclusive Testing Information

Given the fact that it's a closed technical test, it's naturally more exclusive than, for example, an open beta. To gain access in the technical test — which runs from Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. PDT to October 28th — players must meet the listed requirements:

  • Submit an application via the official website
  • Reside in Europe or North America
  • Have access to a PS5, Xbox console, or compatible computer (system requirements include an Intel Core i5-6600 processor, supported graphics card, and sufficient memory)
  • Participate in the official Discord server
  • Sign an NDA via the online community

Application Process

Applications are open now, and to be eligible for the technical test, applicants must complete registration by Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. PDT. Players on Windows PC can also submit their application via the digital platform starting on October 13th, with digital platform registrations due by Oct. 26 at 4 p.m. PDT. Bungie will notify selected participants and provide details of the following procedures.

"This represents a crucial milestone for us as we test our improvements since Marathon's Alpha, including three maps, five runner shells, proximity communication, adjusted gameplay rhythm, solo queue, deeper environmental storytelling, and more," the studio stated. "That said, the Technical Test build is a work in progress and will only include a portion of what's intended for Marathon's full release, concentrating on the early player experience."

Additional Information

More info about the private trial and the actual experience can be found on Marathon's help page. But for players who aren't selected for the trial (or don't have time), there's still good news: Bungie says a official announcement on the project's status is the next thing on the agenda once the test is over.

"There will be a public update on the game's progress in the coming months after the private testing phase!" Bungie announced.
