Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the official, following the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
